Ever walk around your entire house looking for your car keys, only to realize you’re holding them? Me too, and that’s how I felt the first time I photographed a reflection and discovered it was only an illusion.
I mean, duh, reflections aren’t real, but I always assumed they existed on the surface of whatever shiny object made them.
While testing my gear before a pet session one day, I took a snapshot of a reflection bouncing off my phone. The resulting photo resembled a puddle; the reflection was sharp, but the phone, and the table below it, were totally blurred. Even more intriguing, in one corner of the image, several feet away, Gracie’s food bowl was in focus.
The reflection was of our backyard, streaming through sliding glass doors, and Gracie’s bowl was up against those doors. Since focus is determined by distance, it seems reflections are at the same distance as whatever they’re mimicing, but on the other side of the reflective surface.
Crazy, right? I’ve been obsessed ever since.
You don’t need a camera to see this, find a reflection in your screen and these words will blur. The keys were in my hand all along.
P.S. Do you have any title ideas for this photo? I’m not totally in love with the one I chose.
where’s the bowl? I sure can’t see it. Please enlighten me…
It’s the pink thing in the top left corner… it’s got dog bone shapes on the side and inside of it. See it now?
I love how the photo feels like a memory that’s on the verge of being lost to the present. Kind of like you captured the internal image in someone’s mind during the transition between thinking about a past event and focusing on the present. Hopefully that makes sense. Not exactly sure how to articulate my thought.
Haha, I think I get it Chris, and I think that’s a fascinating way to look at it. I’m also assuming you’re talking about the 2nd photo, not the 1st one, right? But tell me if I’m wrong.
I’m on the verge of seeing what you’re talking about, lol, I keep trying to imagine what it’s like in my head when I finish reminiscing and notice now… it’s truly mind-boggling!
This photo is really lovely – the colours, the shapes, the suggestiveness… It seems to remind me of something Egyptian – I think it’s those fan-like shapes, plus the rich colours. Sorry, don’t have a title to suggest (I confess that’s one of the hardest parts of my painting practice – coming up with good titles!), but wanted to let you know how much I like where this series is going.
This is why I love abstract art so much, it looks like different things to different people. I can see the Egyptian connection, now! Thanks for your perspective Dorothy <3
