While most people are oooing and ahhhing about the crisp weather and the beautiful bursts of color that fall brings, I’m in my own little corner, cringing. I can’t help it. To me, autumn is a disease that spreads over the land and kills it. Winter is a cold, dark, dry death, and I dread it.

Throughout this project my eye often finds images that go beyond my visual perception and seem to reflect how my head twists the world. Here, in the unnatural light behind the leaves, I see snow. I feel winter coming and it makes me sad.

I was looking closely at the leaf that was supposed to be my background, when I noticed some discoloration surrounding the main veins that branched out inside it. Rivers of decay were running through the leaf, washing away the bright red to reveal a dull yellowy-brown. It was like seeing fall descend upon one leaf. What beautiful decay.

You get two photos today so I can show you the difference between a vibrant, just plucked leaf and one that is on its way to disintegrating into nothingness. Funny how death can be both beautiful and frightening in the same world, and through the same eyes.

Can you think of any beautiful decay you’ve seen in your life lately? Tell us all about it in the comments below.

Reflections of an Artist: Fine Art Photography with a Splash of Prose (31) – Look Right Through Me

Last year I noticed a bush covered in these alien-looking bunches of buds. Every day I looked out the window and imagined going outside and picking a few of them for a photoshoot, and every day I didn’t do it. As the days passed, the buds bloomed into some not-nearly-as-interesting flowers and my idea rotted away with them in fall.

I started out with a brilliant idea for this series that fizzled out into this single photo. It’s the closest I got to my original vision before I gave up and let myself spiral into the wonderful world of the abstract.

I got excited as I abandoned my original idea and moved towards the unknown, all the while the lyrics from the song “Mad World” repeated in my head, “look right through me, look right through me-e-e.” (hear my favorite version of the song on Youtube – skip ahead to 2:00 to hear the part that inspired me)

I looked right through this bulbous specimen to the leaf, and I think that’s where I fell into the bunny pit… fall with me some more next week =)

Reflections of an Artist: Fine Art Photography with a Splash of Prose (30) – Blue Behind the Scenes

I’d been dreaming of bokeh-ful photos for awhile before I finally created these past few images. What’s bokeh? It’s simply those out of focus orbs you see in the background of these past few photos. It’s the only photography jargon I will bother you with; I promise-I’m just so in love with it I had to tell you more about it!

Those dreamy spots can only come from hot spots in the background. I could have just put a pile of Christmas lights on my set, but the yellowy (and god forbid – multi-colored!) lights were not right for the mood I was going for.

Instead, I found these styrofoam balls covered in sequins. When I bounced my light off of them they became pastel colored lights that shone just perfectly. I filled a pie dish with them, and covered it in plastic wrap to hold them in place as I leaned the plate up against a black background. I used blue gels (they are see-through plastic sheets tinted blue).  over my two flashes pointed at the background to get the color right. Wa-la! Bokeh to die for.

P.S. – I also have a wide version of this photo available in my shop

When the sun finally dips below the horizon, sunset colors quickly fade away and, for just a few fleeting moments, you are enveloped in this eerie twilight.

The color is probably more gorgeous due to the simple fact that its life span is so short. When sky blue is the all-day norm, twilight blue is like an orgasm: amazing but brief.

Next week I’ll be sharing the last image in my blue flower series and I’ll give you a behind the scenes look at my set for the past 10 photos. Then it’s on to the next thing!

What does blue mean to you? Isn’t it fascinating that blue is the only color that can stand alone as an emotion, and that very feeling is the opposite of what most people feel on a blue, sunny day? Sometimes, even the sun is smiling.

So, I wrote an acrostic poem about it. I call it:

Blue Blue Blue

Beaming smiles.

Lushious bodies shimmering

Under the sun;

Every smile pure.

Being melacholy,

Living, just barely.

Unhappily smiling away

Every moment.

Bipolar color

Leaves emotions

Undecided until they

Erupt.

Reflections of an Artist: Fine Art Photography with a Splash of Prose (27) – Is Beauty Flawless?

While I can appreciate the skill involved in making a 40-year-old woman look like she’s not a second over 18, I really hate the impossible standards that images set for women of all ages.

That being said, you should know I’m a total hypocrite. I spend hours making my images flawless in Photoshop. Every speck of dust; deleted. Every sign of decay; rejuvenated. Any element that offends my eye; eliminated.

At least I can’t offend a flower by fixing its flaws. =/

What do you think about excessive retouching on women?

Reflections of an Artist: Fine Art Photography with a Splash of Prose (26) – Discovering the Deadly Nightshade

I was strolling around the lake with Nick when I caught a glimpse of this deadly nightshade, aka climbing nightshade, flower.

I wondered how many times I had marched right by this beautiful flower. I’ve passed this very spot hundreds of times in the past 20 years and I’ve never seen anything like it before. Naturally, I plucked it, and photo possibilities danced through my head the whole walk home. As I’m sure you figured out, this is the result.

It amazes me how many things go unnoticed in our worlds. Beauty is often close enough to kiss you; you just need to stop and take a look around every once in awhile. Click to tweet this!

My friend JP likes to remind me that the sky is purple in my world. Ok now before you click away thinking this is some reference to my acid tripping days, be assured that I have not ever taken that particular drug.

This is just JP’s way of saying “ok weirdo” and it’s a reference to something I once told him. I wonder sometimes if my perception of color is the same as your perception of color. Someone points to the sky when you are very young and teaches you to call it blue. Everyone knows that the sky is blue, but who’s to say that what you perceive as blue from my perspective isn’t actually what I would call purple?

Ok so maybe it is a trippy idea… that explains why he stared at me for 30 seconds like I was popping imaginary bubbles in thin air. Now he won’t let me forget it!

Reflections of an Artist: Fine Art Photography with a Splash of Prose (24) – Letting Go

Want this hanging on your wall? Click the photo to buy now!

I could hear the blood rushing through my ears with every thud of my heart. My knuckles turned white as I gripped the steering wheel. It was partially an angry impulse and partially an attempt to stop my arms from shaking.

What set off this temper tantrum? It really is the most idiotic thing… someone cut me off in rush hour traffic.

Am I absolutely insane? Yes. It’s a human condition; I’m sure of it. We cling to all the wrong things for all the wrong reasons.

“Let it go,” has become a mantra in my life lately. So much that I’m daydreaming of a new tattoo.

Things to let go of:

– anger and resentment
– unconstructive criticism
– people who spread negativity
– the desire to be “right”
– fear of what others think of you
– fear of making mistakes
– fear of things different than what you’re accustomed too
– grudges old and new
– guilt for doing what makes you happy
– sentiment surrounding possessions
– the desire to win & the fear of losing

What do you wish you could let go of? Tell me below!

P.S. This post started out as a very long and detailed description of what happened to cause that road rage and the horrible thoughts that went through my head… obviously I hadn’t let it go yet. In retrospect I always realize the things I get angry about are just not worth the energy I put into them, so this post is my attempt to put my resentment to rest and avoid future ‘episodes.’ Thanks for reading =)

Enjoy this story? I'd love you forever if you'd share it! =)
